Best NACS and Tesla Charging Adapters (2026): Which One You Need
There are two very different kinds of charging adapter: Level 2 (AC) adapters for home and destination chargers, and DC fast-charging adapters for Tesla Superchargers. This guide covers the AC adapters you can buy on Amazon, and explains why the DC adapter should come from your automaker.

Quick picks by situation
Best for J1772 cars at Tesla Destination chargers
Tesla-to-J1772 Level 2 (AC) adapter
- Who it's for:
- Drivers of cars with a J1772 or CCS1 port who stay at hotels or visit places with Tesla Wall Connectors or Destination chargers.
- Why:
- Many hotels and workplaces have Tesla AC chargers; this adapter lets a J1772 car use them.
- Skip if:
- You want Supercharger access. This adapter is AC only and does not work at Superchargers.
- What to check:
- Check the adapter's current rating against the charger, its safety listing, and how it latches so it can't be left behind.
Best for NACS cars at J1772 chargers
J1772-to-Tesla (NACS) adapter
- Who it's for:
- Tesla owners and drivers of newer NACS-port cars who use public or workplace Level 2 chargers.
- Why:
- Many public Level 2 chargers have J1772 plugs, and this adapter lets a NACS car use them.
- Skip if:
- Your car already came with one. Tesla has included a J1772 adapter with many of its cars, so check the glovebox or frunk first.
- What to check:
- Check the current rating against the chargers you use and buy a listed adapter. Keep it in the car so it's with you at the charger.
Best for NACS cars that travel
Portable Level 2 charger with a NACS plug
- Who it's for:
- Owners of NACS-port cars who charge at family homes or campgrounds with 240V outlets.
- Why:
- A portable charger with a native NACS plug avoids stacking an adapter on a J1772 cable.
- Skip if:
- Your car came with a mobile connector, or you only ever charge at home.
- What to check:
- Match the plug to the outlets you'll use (NEMA 14-50, 6-50 or a household 5-15), and never use an extension cord.
How to choose
AC (Level 2) vs DC (Supercharger) adapters
Level 2 adapters change the plug shape for AC charging. DC fast-charging adapters carry far more current, and automakers say to use only the adapter they sell or approve.
Ford, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz, among others, tell owners to use the DC adapter they sell or approve, and Hyundai says its warranty won't cover damage from non-Hyundai accessories. Our NACS adapter checker lists what each automaker says, with sources.
Which way does the adapter go?
Listings name adapters charger-end first or car-end first, and they mix both. Look at your car's port: a J1772 or CCS1 car needs a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter to use Tesla AC chargers, and a NACS car needs a J1772-to-Tesla adapter for J1772 chargers.
Ratings and safety
Check the adapter's current and voltage rating against the charger, and look for a UL, ETL or CSA listing. If an adapter fits loosely or gets hot, stop using it.
Keep it with the car
An adapter at home doesn't help at the charger. Keep it in a small case in the frunk or glovebox; some adapters have a lock to deter theft at public stations.
FAQ
Can I buy a Supercharger adapter on Amazon?
Third-party DC adapters are sold, but automakers say to use only their own or Tesla-sold adapters at Superchargers, and Tesla's policy restricts third-party adapters. Check our NACS adapter checker and your automaker's site first.
Does an adapter slow down charging?
Not by itself. Charging speed is set by the charger, the car's onboard charger and the lowest current rating in the chain, including the adapter.
Do I need an adapter at home?
Usually not: buy a home charger with your car's connector. An adapter makes sense if a J1772 car and a NACS car share one charger.
How we picked
- We picked by which car and which charger you have, because the right adapter depends on both.
- We have not tested these products hands-on. Links open Amazon searches by spec (or a named model where the pick is about that model), so you compare current options, prices and reviews yourself.
- We don't link third-party Supercharger (DC) adapters, because automakers say to use their own.
